We all know that the Netherlands is a country of water. During this cycle route, you will really experience it. Everywhere you cycle, you will see a ditch, a puddle or you will even cycle over a river. The villages you pass also have their own connection with water. Groot-Ammers already has the water in its name. The village name is derived from Ammers, Ammer or Amer, which used to mean 'watercourse'. Nowadays, the place is best known for the stork centre Het Liesvelt. You will pass it on this route. Goudriaan is a ribbon settlement that is literally cut in half by the small Goudriaan river. Giessenburg is not only the name of the village you are cycling through, but also of the castle that stood here from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The lords of Giessenburg were also water wardens of the Overwaard water board. In Giessenburg, there is also a special museum where you can learn everything about the (water) history of the village. The fortified town of Nieuwpoort is one of the smallest fortified towns in the Netherlands. The town lies on the Lek and is entirely surrounded by a moat. In the town hall, you will find a historical museum. Naturally, you will see more than one windmill in this polder landscape. Your Dutch experience is complete!
