Cycling route Maasduinen National Park
Elsteren, Wellerlooi, Arcen
The unique nature reserve Maasduinen National Park was created by the interplay of man, wind and water. Man has always bent nature to his will: by cutting down trees for farming or planting them for wood production.
The last Ice Age brought a powerful westerly wind which carried away sand to form the specific river dunes here. Because water had free play, sand and gravel were deposited in some places, while in other places sand and gravel were carried away by the current. All this together has created a unique nature reserve where the managers (municipality of Bergen, Stichting het Limburgs Landschap, Staatsbosbeheer and private owners) take care of management and protection.
