Cycling route Bird watching in Zeeland
Zierikzee, Serooskerke Schouwen, Kerkwerve
Zeeland is great for cycling. With its vast landscape, beautiful coastline and small villages, it is the perfect destination to explore on two wheels. Especially if you love birds, because they are certainly to be found here on the coast. Especially on the coast of the Eastern Scheldt. The area from Ouwerkerk to the Oosterscheldekering is so loved by birds that it is also known as the 'Bird Boulevard of Zeeland'.
The varied landscape of Schouwen-Duiveland offers a diverse and rich birdlife. Here, it doesn't really matter where you cycle: you can see birds everywhere! The combination of dunes, woods, creeks and polders makes this area an ideal place for many bird species to forage, breed or rest during migrations. You might even discover a white-tailed eagle, spoonbill or black-tailed godwit.
In winter, too, it is a cosy gathering of species here. Birds that breed in northern and eastern Europe in summer spend the winter on the Zeeland coast. Special species you may be lucky enough to spot include the snow bunting and the ice duck. Of wigeons, shelducks, avocets and barnacle geese, we can say with some certainty that you will see them on your route!
We have linked three viewpoints to this cycle route, so you are guaranteed special discoveries and unique birds. From here, you can silently observe the birds without disturbing them. What more could a birder want?
