Cycle tour along the rivers and through the Betuwe part 1
Culemborg, Beusichem, Buren
Plenty to experience and discover during this cycling tour! Cycle between the rivers Lek and Linge and discover one of the most beautiful cycling areas in the Netherlands: the Betuwe. The region is rich in fruit orchards, which are especially romantic in spring with their beautiful blossoms. In summer, the leaves turn green and the fruit starts to grow. In late August, September and partly in October, you can enjoy the fresh fruit harvest. Many nurseries and growers have roadside stalls with all kinds of fruit for sale.
This cycle route also takes you through a number of quaint little towns with nice cultural and historical sights. Buren is also known as Oranjestad, because William of Orange married Anna van Buren there in 1551, making him Count of Buren. Therefore, our king was rightly allowed to participate in the Elfstedentocht under the name W.A. van Buren. In the museum Buren en Oranje you will find more information about this.
A little west of Culemborg lies Werk aan het Spoel. Nowadays you can relax here, but it used to be part of the New Dutch Waterline. Will you hop on your bike to discover the Betuwe?
