Cycle route Zwartsluis, Weerribben and Giethoorn

Zwartsluis, Sint Jansklooster, Giethoorn
A varied route past characteristic villages and through the unique nature of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Along the way you will see hay meadows, marsh forests and of course plenty of reed beds. You will also pass a piece of rare quaking bog, the pride of De Wieden. Various special plants grow in quaking bogs, such as Scorpion Moss and Wire Sedge. Quaking bog only occurs in peat areas.
Cultural history has an important place on this route. You will pass several impressive windmills and interesting museums. But water is also a central theme. Many of the villages in the Weerribben-Wieden were once only accessible by boat. Some still have more waterways than roads.
In addition to the many ditches and canals in the nature reserve, you will also cycle along a number of lakes. For example, you will see the Beulakerwijde, the largest lake in the Kop van Overijssel, located northeast of the village of Sint Jansklooster. It is separated from the Belterwijde by the Veneweg (N762), which forms the southern shore of the lake. Just behind Giethoorn you will cycle along the Bovenwijde and you might catch a glimpse of Giethoornsche Meer. Between Meppel and Zwartsluis you will meander along the Zwarte Water.
This route will take you to all the highlights of the Weerribben-Wieden. A day to enjoy nature!
