Cycle route Woudrichem and Poederoijen
Woudrichem, Poederoijen, Andel
During this route, you cycle along the Afgedamde Maas, which you also cross twice by ferry. Be sure to check first whether the ferry goes, especially in the early and late season, they do not always go. But if they go, you will pass through beautiful places in the process.
Take for instance Woudrichem, which for years was the setting for the popular TV series Dokter Tinus, as well as for the youth series Floris and the film Oorlogswinter. Did you know that the fortified town originated from a marketplace on the banks of the river? That marketplace is still the bustling heart of the city.
You will also pass Slot Loevestein, built by Dirc Loef van Horne. A castle that was ideal for levying tolls and of course world-famous for the escape of Hugo de Groot in a book chest. Lovers of history can also visit the Batteries of Poederoijen, part of the Dutch Water Defence Lines.
A stronghold of former times is also the village of Andel with an inn from 1759, Roman finds from the 2nd century AD and the Romboutstoren from the 14th century. Buried at its foot is Jan Claesen, reputedly the trumpeter in the prince's army....
