Cycle route World Heritage | Wouda Steam Pumping Station
Lemmer, Tjerkgaast, Rutten
The Wouda Steam Pumping Station is the largest working steam pumping station in the world! Its sixty-metre-long chimney catches the eye from afar. Not only is the pumping station still working, it is also still in use. When the water level rises, the Woudagemaal grinds the land dry again for the Frisians. Visit the pumping station and marvel at its history in the visitor centre.
Near Lemmer, cycle around Grutte Brekken, as it is pronounced by the Frisians. The Groote Brekken has this name because there used to be a Kleine Brekken. This has been reclaimed so now you can only enjoy this large lake. From the south-eastern tip of Friesland, you cycle into the Noordoostpolder without realising it.
A beautiful ride through the agricultural landscape and the Kuinder forest brings you to the IJsselmeer. Cycle along the water while looking out at that huge chimney of the Wouda Steam Pumping Station and the Lemmer lighthouse.
