The Wadden Sea is a unique piece of the Netherlands with a rich history and great appeal. It is a natural wonder that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site for its biological, geological and cultural-historical value. In the Wadden Sea, fresh and salt water alternate. This makes the Wadden Sea of great importance for biodiversity; more than 10,000 species of animals, plants and micro-organisms live there!

The entire Wadden Sea stretches from the north of North Holland to southwest Denmark. On Texel, you can totally take in the Wadden Sea. You cycle a beautiful stretch on the south-eastern side of the island, passing the Wadden Sea and the many salt marshes. Via beautiful nature reserves and agricultural landscapes, you arrive at the North Sea coast of Texel. Here you will find Ecomare, a museum and educational centre dedicated to the protection of the North Sea and the Wadden Sea.

You will admire a large collection of animals, plants and fossils. Stranded marine mammals, such as seals, are cared for there so that they can later be released back into the sea. Stop here during your bike ride to learn more about the peculiarities of the Wadden area. Ecomare houses a special exhibition on the Wadden Sea, where you will learn all about the origins, characteristics and fascinating animal kingdom of the area.

While cycling, also look for wildlife on the island yourself. You will find plenty of bird-watching huts, often with a sign indicating which birds you can spot there. On Texel, you will also notice its rich cultural history. The old fishing villages and centuries-old landscape make it a wonderfully varied cycle route.
