Cycle route Westeinderplassen
Aalsmeer, Leimuiderbrug, Abbenes
Around the Westeinderplassen lie Aalsmeer, Kudelstaart, Rijnshout, Burgerveen and Leimuiden. This cycle route runs right through them. The nature reserve is a vast peat and lake area of about ten square kilometres. As in many other places in the Netherlands, the lakes were created by peat excavation. The Westeinderplassen are the only remaining peat ponds around Aalsmeer; the other ponds were all reclaimed due to lack of building land.
The Westeinderplassen consist of a network of small islands and ditches where pike, eel and the rare European catfish can be found. You can not only enjoy cycling here, but also boating. Around 50 marinas can be found along the banks. This makes it an ideal location for water sports enthusiasts and cycle routes through nature.
Besides your visit to the Westeinderplassen, you will also pass the Amsterdamse Bos and the Schinkelbos, which is also part of the Amsterdamse Bos. In the 1930s, the Municipality of Amsterdam started a work-creation project to combat unemployment and create a nice recreational spot for all Amsterdammers. Different parts such as the Schinkel forest, blossom park or bird island were constructed to create more greenery around the capital. Nature here is naturally kept in check by Scottish Highlanders who maintain the land, while chewing.
