Cycle route Waters beyond Apeldoorn
Twello, Klarenbeek, Lieren
Apeldoorn lies between the wooded Veluwe and the IJssel. In between, a number of beautiful little waters have emerged. From dead straight canals to meandering streams and large recreational lakes. Along the way, you pass small villages, each with its own character.
Take for instance Lieren, a small village southeast of Apeldoorn. It is an agricultural village with only a small number of houses, farms, shops and a church. But it is also the village of the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij, a travelling railway museum through the Veluwe. A tip to extend your cycle route with a train ride in this historic steam train!
Through a mixture of woods and meadows, you arrive in Twello. This village stands for geniality and tranquillity. Visit special shops in the cosy centre or sit down at one of the inviting terraces. Every Friday afternoon you can enjoy extra lively hustle and bustle when the weekly market is held on the Marktplein. From Twello it is only a short distance to Bussloo, a beautiful large recreational lake where people splash and relax on the beach on warm days.
Besides Bussloo, you'll also pass Alba. Huh, that Italian town? No, the lake near Oosterhuizen! The lake is named after the Alba brickworks, which in 1906 excavated the earth at this spot to produce lime sandstone. The hole filled up with water and thus the Albaplas or Albameer was created. The Apeldoorns Canal flows right past it.
Between junctions 52 and 51, you follow a stretch of unpaved path. You cycle along the Vrijerbergspreng. If you follow it a little longer at junction 51, you will arrive at the Loenen Waterfalls. Don't expect towering rocks with water splashing down from them here, but it is a nice sight in this area.
The route is beautiful any season, but because of the abundance of water, it's highly recommended during summer. Bring swimwear if you want to cool down on a hot day along the way!
Note: during the route, you will encounter some major crossings. Be careful here and pay close attention to the junction signs to continue your route in the right direction.
