Cycle route View of Nijmegen
Nijmegen, Lent, Bemmel
Discover the oldest city in the Netherlands with a history dating back more than 2000 years! The city's strategic location on the river Waal and between the hills made it an important location for the Romans. The ‘Face of Nijmegen’ is a giant Roman mask commemorating the Romans' influences. You can see the mask perfectly from the Railway Bridge. If you cycle a little further, you have the opportunity to visit the island of Veur-Lent and take a closer look at the mask.
The Waal bridge takes you back to the centre of Nijmegen, but before we get there, we take a turn into the beautiful nature reserve of the Ooijpolder. This used to be a swampy area, but around 1300 the first dykes were built around the area. Cycle along the old estuaries and the many water pools and ponds and who knows, you might suddenly come across a Konik horse or a Galloway cattle! Special bird species, such as the black tern and bittern, can also be found in this area.
Enjoy the fantastic places to see on this short cycle route. And that short distance is with good reason. Because now you have time left for the unique highlight for your senses: a visit to the muZIEum.
In this museum, you experience what it is like to be visually impaired. With expert guides, Virtual Reality glasses and fun experiments, you will learn what everyday life is like when you have impaired vision, and discover how powerful your other senses can be...
