Cycle Route Veluwe Folk Tales (Part 1)
Ermelo, Garderen, Kootwijk
A cycle route full of stories, back into the past. When the farmers had harvested and winter came, there was little work left for them. On Veluwe farms, there was still some maintenance work to be done, but the long, dark evenings were perfect for telling each other stories. About godless monks in Putten, innocent criminals in Garderen, lost schoolmasters in the Kootwijkerzand and trapped hunters in Hoog Soeren...
The Veluwe mysteries take place in beautiful nature. This cycle route is full of forests, heathland and sand drifts. You will also pass the Uddelemeer, a geological remnant from the last ice age. The lake originated from a collapsed ice mound, also known as a pingorui, and is the source of the Hierdense Beek. People already lived here in the prehistory. All kinds of traces of life from the Funnel Beaker Culture have been found around the lake. Still visible is the Hunneschans, a medieval structure in the landscape. Such a natural phenomenon was the inspiration for several legends about giants and about Donar the god of thunder. Add the moment to your route and discover the legends.
Travel through the unspoilt landscape from story to story. Along the way, you will find beautiful hospitality venues to recover from all the impressions. A wonderful day out while you go back in history!
