Vierhouten, Apeldoorn, Hoog Soeren

Enjoy the beautiful forests of the Veluwe. On the way there are many places where you can learn more about the history and culture of Vierhouten and the Kroondomeinen. For example there are different explanations about the origin of the name Vierhouten. However the most likely explanation is that 'houten' means woodland. And when you cycle this route you will understand why! Vierhouten is surrounded by no less than four forests, including one of the most famous forests of the Netherlands: the Kroondomein.

Gortel is a special village on the Veluwe. The protected village sight consists of 25 well-preserved farms, forest houses and a school from the 19th century. As you cycle through the village, you can feel the tranquillity that it exudes. From time immemorial, the village has had close ties with the royal family: between 1900 and 1915, Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik purchased a large nature reserve. They loved to stay in this area. Wilhelmina loved to paint the heathland. Many people from the surrounding area then worked in the Kroondomein for the royal family. In 1959, Wilhelmina donated it back to the state.

Apeldoorn comes from 'apa', early medieval for water; and 'thorn' which means something like tree. Trees standing near the water probably gave Apeldoorn its name. The town still lives up to its name: the beautiful Wieselse plas near junction 26 is in the middle of the woods. Here, too, you can find yourself in royal spheres: from junction 26, cycle a little further towards Apeldoorn to visit Paleis Het Loo.

You have probably already noticed that the landscape becomes more sloping. Hoog Soeren is literally located high up, so you will face a few climbs. But it is worth it: the nature is phenomenal! If you cycle this route during sunrise or sunset, you have a good chance of spotting wildlife.
