Cycle route through picturesque Amerongen
Amerongen, Wijk bij Duurstede, Leersum
You may know the village of Amerongen from the Amerongen Castle of the same name. Completely destroyed by the French in 1672, this castle was completely rebuilt in its current style. See this amazing castle from the outside, but also take a walk through the castle gardens or visit the museum.
Amerongen also has its own 'mountain': the Amerongse Berg. At 69.2 metres above sea level, this hill is the highest point in the province of Utrecht. In the woods around the mountain are a number of pines dating back to 1770. The forest used to be laid out as hunting grounds for the castle lords who lived in Amerongen Castle.
Between the 17th and 20th centuries, a lot of tobacco was grown in Amerongen. You can still find a dozen characteristic tobacco barns from those days in the village. In the Tobacco Barn Museum, you will see and learn more about this agriculture and what influence it had on the village.
Besides Amerongen, you cycle past various villages, castles, mills and can enjoy the view of the Eiland van Maurik along the way.
