Cycle route through idyllic Smeerling
Wedde, Ter Wupping, Wedderveer
Hop on your bike in idyllic Smeerling. Between the old Saxon farms, you imagine yourself back in the old Dutch days. Along the way, experience Groningen's national monuments. The Spinnenkop in Wedderveer is a small sawmill built in 1938, making it the last mill built for economic reasons in the province of Groningen.
Huis te Wedde is the most fought-over fortress or castle in Groningen. For centuries, the 'House' was the seat of the Lords of Westerwolde or their representative. The history of this 'House' is therefore closely intertwined with the history of the region. From the sixteenth to early nineteenth century, the Criminal Court was located in this house. This court consisted of the drost of Wedde, the judges of Vlagtwedde and Bellingwolde and two assessors. They handed down death sentences that were executed at the Giezelbaarg.
There is plenty to see on this short cycle route. But we recommend you also dismount to enjoy the beautiful nature. Leave your bike for a while, take a beautiful walk through the romantic area and go exploring!
