Cycle route through eastern Achterhoek
Winterswijk, Ratum, Aalten
Winterswijk and its surrounding area has been designated a National Landscape. The landscape stretches from Aalten to the German border. Winterswijk lies exactly in the middle. Cycling in the east of the Achterhoek gives a good impression of the coulisse landscape. You see hedgerows and old woods with Scots pines, often over a hundred years old. From the Natuurobservation Post 'Vragenderveen', you can get an overview of this beautiful area. Further to the east are the Winterswijk quarries. At this special geological site, you can see the history in the different layers of the earth.
You cycle past the Museum in Hiding and the rural Farm Museum De Neeth. If you are going for the traditional Dutch way of doing things, then it is worth stopping at the Venemansmolen - also known as the Oude Molen - and at the Meenkmolen. If you are more of an art lover, admire the Mondrian Monument on the way. The combination of museums, mills and great nature on this cycle route makes for a complete day out!
