Cycle route The surroundings of painter Jongkind
Ootmarsum, Tilligte, Lattrop
Artist Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) grew up in the village of Lattrop. Jongkind is considered the most influential 19th-century painter after Vincent van Gogh. He produced watercolours, drawings, etchings and lithographs. Jongkind was one of the precursors of French Impressionism and was especially known for his use of colour, low horizons and large air parades.
This cycle route will gradually take you to various places where Jongkind lived in his younger years. You will also pass the grounds of his parental home, which unfortunately was demolished some time ago. In honour of this painter, a special monument has been erected on the site of the parental home, the Jongkindmonument. Tip: walk into the house to read all about Jongkind's life.
On the cycle route you will pass a number of windmills; the Oortmanmolen, Westerveldmolen and the watermills of Singraven. The first two are over 150 years old and therefore have a rich (living) history. Apart from the 'normal' mills, various water mills can also be viewed at the Singraven Estate. The Netherlands has achieved many great things with regard to water. One of these is the 'Schuivenhuisje', to supply the river Dinkel with enough water.
The environment of artist Jongkind is one where there is plenty to discover and experience. Hop on your bike and experience it!
