Cycle route The surprising Veluwe
Harderwijk, Hierden, Putten
Of course, when you think of the Veluwe, you think of forests and don't worry: you will certainly encounter them today. However, these forests have only been around for the last century; before that, the Veluwe was one shifting sands area. But this cycle route has a lot more to offer: water, heathland, farmland, castles. And, of course, lots of nature with special birds, rare animals and unique plants.
Between Nunspeet and Harderwijk, you ride through humid forest and meadows along the Veluwe Lake, where thousands of little swans search for food in the winter. Farmland here slowly changes into natural grassland where many plants and animals find their territory. In spring, the fields are coloured pink by the cuckoo flowers; in summer, you can see the white-tailed eagle flying here.
The Oldenaller estate in Putten is a hidden gem with a stately home. Another special house is on the Oud Groevenbeek estate.
