Cycle route The historical life elixir of Deventer
Deventer, Twello, Gorssel
More than 1250 years of history can be found along the IJssel in this bustling Hanseatic city and it shows. The water of the IJssel provides a new elixir of life every day, building on its rich history. The monumental buildings are home to fine restaurants and unique shops, from traditional crafts in small boutiques to modern department stores. Deventer Brush Shop is the oldest shop in the city and surrounding area: from 1860, brushes, screens and haircloths were crafted here in the workshop for years. When industrialisation caught up with handicrafts in the 1950s, the workshop was used as a shop that exists to this day.
Deventen people know well what burgundy living is, so you can enjoy plenty of delicious food and drink here. For example, try the traditional Deventer cake at the Deventer cake shop or a slice of cheese from the 'Deventer Roem' at cheese specialty shop De Brink.
After exploring the beautiful city, take the Deventer ferry across the IJssel to explore the surrounding area. Vast fields, rows of tall trees and farmland bring you to the cosy village of Twello. Once again, this village knows how to treat you to a wide variety of shops: from surprising gift shops to lovely bookshops. The friendly atmosphere invites you to take a rest on a terrace.
Still under 30 kilometres, this route gives you a complete day out along the highlights of Deventer and its surroundings!
Tip for during a hot summer day: bring swimwear so you can take a refreshing dip in the river IJssel or at recreational lake Bussloo!
Note: Between junctions 27 and 17, the route goes via a ferry (Dommerholtsveer). This sails 7 days a week from mid-April to the last weekend of October between 09:30 and 18:00. Do you cycle when the ferry does not sail? Then stay on the west side of the IJssel by taking the Deventer ferry from Deventer at junction 24 to junction 61. Sails daily from 8am (Mon-Fri), 9am (Sat) or 10am (Sun) in the morning until 11pm. Continue via junction 16 and then 17, where you can pick up the route again.
