Cycle route Swans & Sand drifts

Nunspeet, Hierden, Hulshorst
This cycle route takes you through a varied landscape, but sand is the focus today. You will cycle along Lake Veluwe, where small beaches invite you to stop for a while. On warm days, a refreshing dip is highly recommended. The water is not only a pleasant place for recreation, but also a home for swans. All year round they float peacefully on the water, sometimes hundreds at a time!
The route takes you through the outskirts of Hierden. Narrow roads lead you past farms and vast fields. Cows, sheep and horses graze in the meadows. But here too you will often see swans grazing in the fields.
Gradually more and more trees appear along the road. Then the high cycle bridge looms up. The climb is steep, taking you over both the railway and the motorway. Then comes the descent, after which you cycle into the forest.
The shifting sand areas are a special part of the route. You will pass both the Beekhuizerzand and the Hulshorsterzand. This type of landscape is rare in the Netherlands and in Europe. The fact that you will cross through two of them on this route is quite unique!
The vast sandy plains give an almost desert-like feeling. Park your bike and climb one of the dunes. The view is well worth the effort. You return to Lake Veluwe via the village of Hulshorst. Enjoy the peace and quiet along the way. And how many swans did you see?
