The province of Friesland is the ideal location to go away in your own country. Sneek is a beautiful place to discover during a day out.
The historic city center of Sneek is well known for the Sneekweek and well worth a visit. In the fifteenth century Sneek was the capital of Friesland and today it is the third largest city of the province. The city is surrounded by the lake district of Friesland. There is plenty to see and experience. See Sneek from the water, the terrace or dive into the history.
This route also takes you to the nearby town of Scharnegoutum. The village is called 'Skearnegoutum'. The village originated on a mound, in this mound objects from the fourth century were found during excavations. Originally the village was located near the Middelzee, now it lies by the Zwette. This canal ensures that Scharnegoutum is also the only village in Friesland through which the Elfstedentocht passes.
