Cycle route Skitterend Skagen
Schagen, Callantsoog, Oudesluis
The cosy town of Schagen is well worth a visit. It is a town with a village character, united culture and rich history, and you can taste that. The atmosphere is convivial: all Schagen locals give you a friendly greeting. Don't be surprised if you are addressed in West Frisian, because the 'Skagenezen' speak dialect. They like to keep the West Frisian culture alive. Therefore, during the summer months, various events and West Frisian markets are organised where everyone is dressed in traditional costume. During the other months, you can visit the Farm & Carriage Museum to learn more about Schagen and West Friesland.
Over the polder dykes, you'll reach the North Sea coast in no time. Cycle through the dunes near Callantsoog and enjoy the beautiful nature. You will notice that the landscape around Schagen is criss-crossed by canals in many places. The most striking is the Noordhollandsch Kanaal, which you will cross twice during this route. At 't Zand, you cycle over a real raft bridge, a floating, movable bridge. There are only five of these left in the whole of the Netherlands. These five remaining can all be found in North Holland. Indeed, these five can only be found crossing the Noordhollandsch Kanaal in North Holland.
With the West-Frisian Omringdijk on one side and gigantic bulb fields on the other, which bloom beautifully in spring, cycling around Schagen is always a treat!
