Cycle route Rivierenland and Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Rhenen, Kesteren, Elst
The cycle route will take you through Rivierenland and a part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Rhenen lies on the Nederrijn and is part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Between Junctions 52 and 32, you will pass De Grebbeberg where the Battle of the Grebbeberg took place on 10 May 1940. This is the last hill before the Heuvelrug becomes the Gelderse Vallei.
Around Elst (the Utrecht version) you can find quite a few hills. The Elsterberg of 63.2 metres and the Galgenberg can be seen to the north of the village. North-east of the village are the Prattenburgse Berg, the Sparreboomsche Berg and the Buurtsche Berg. The village of Lienden is known for its fruit cultivation, and in the spring you will find beautiful blossom trees here.
Note: you will encounter cycle ferries along the way. Most sail all year round, with the exception of Foot Ferry Lienden-Rhenen. It sails from April to September, but not daily. Check the disembarkation time and the website for more information on the sailing schedule.
Do you cycle the route when the ferry does not sail? Then from junction 09, follow junctions 08-77-41-40 to rejoin the route (or vice versa from the other direction).
