Cycle route Pieterpad (part 10)
Overloon, Gennep, Wanssum
Two friends, Toos and Bertje devised and walked the Pieterpad between 1978 and 1983. A long-distance walking route (500 km) from Pieterburen in northern Groningen to Sint-Pietersberg in southern Limburg in 26 stages that are easily accessible by public transport and where you can stay overnight. The scenery along the way is hugely varied, but equally beautiful everywhere.
Where you can walk, you can also cycle, and we wouldn't be Fietsnetwerk if we didn't set out some great cycling tours for you inspired by the Pieterpad. We made 14 routes totalling almost 1,300 km along all the places on the Pieterpad. We did make circles of them so that you always return to your starting point. This is part 10 and leads from Gennep to Swolgen....
Those cycling through Gennep should definitely check out the Ellen Hoffmannplein, a unique square with modern mosaics. The square can be admired behind the old town hall on the Markt. In the old 17th-century town hall, you'll find the Ceramics Museum.
Wanssum has a port of great regional significance. In 1934, an industrial port was dug for employment. A cosy marina was added in 1963. Here you can settle down on the terrace of the harbour café and enjoy a wonderful view over the water. In and around the village of Wanssum, there are many chapels and crucifixes commemorating the Catholic faith.
When you arrive at Oud Bergen, get off at Kunsthuis De Bakkerij. Here you will come into contact with art in a special way. Immerse yourself in these nostalgic surroundings and then get back on your bike full of knowledge.
Start and finish your route at the pick-up point between junctions 54 and 44 near Overloon. Here you will find ample parking space and after your bike ride you will have an address to end the day with a delicious snack and drink.
Note: you will encounter a bicycle ferry on the way. It sails from 1 April to the end of October. Check the disembarkation time and the website for more information on the sailing schedule.
Do you cycle the route when the ferry does not sail? Then detour via junctions 15-71-18-59-14 (or vice versa from the other direction).
