Winschoten, Veendam, Scheemda

Groningen has many windmills due to water management, grain production and favourable wind conditions. Polder mills kept the land dry, while flour and husking mills processed grain for the flourishing trade. Due to the open landscapes and constant wind, windmills were an efficient source of energy.

You will pass the Tjaskermolen in Nieuw-Scheemda, the only post mill in Groningen. Built in 1992 as a windmill for a nature reserve, it was moved to Pastorieweg in 2001. Due to its fragile construction, it is dismantled and stored in winter. In Winschoten you will pass Molen Edens, the oldest existing stone mill in the Netherlands, built in 1763. Once a flour and peel mill, it still turns regularly thanks to volunteers. After several restorations, the mill is in top condition and an icon of the city.

You will pass many more windmills while cycling through the green Groningen landscape. Enjoy the old villages, farms and water features.
