Cycle route on exploration between Maas and Waal
Nijmegen, Wijchen, Niftrik
The area between Maas and Waal, between places like Niftrik, Wijchen, Nijmegen and Beuningen, is a beautiful area to get to know by bike. This route starts along the quiet stream of the river Maas at Niftrik and takes you past historical and natural sights. For example, you cycle past Wijchen Castle, which houses the Wijchen town hall, as well as a museum open to visitors.
Over the Maas-Waal canal, you cycle into the lively centre of Nijmegen. Nijmegen is a pleasant city to wander around in, you can no doubt have fun here, but today we ask your special attention to the city parks. This route passes the Goffertpark, the Westerpark and the famous Kronenburgpark (known from the Frank Boeijen song). Each of them lovely spots for a short walk or a little break from your bike ride. Kronenburgpark is home to a number of historical monuments. The Goffertpark is a favourite spot for the more sporty park-goer and the Westerpark is a green park with a sculpture garden.
Once you leave busy Nijmegen behind, you cycle along the peaceful dike along the river Waal with its beautiful floodplains. Just past Weurt, you can deviate a little from the route to see the Weurtsche Straatje, a beautiful path with historical trees. In the floodplains, you'll also find dyke warehouses. Beautiful old industrial buildings, where the equipment needed to maintain the dykes used to be stored. Beuningen has such a dyke warehouse and further on at Ewijk, such a house has been converted into an exhibition area. During the summer months, you can go here on weekends to view works by local artists.
After Ewijk, you cycle through the green region back to Niftrik, passing a single castle and several old mills. A lovely way to explore this beautiful area and have a nice relaxing day out at the same time!
