Cycle route on clogs and summer boats through Twente
Almelo, Wierden, Rijssen
Today you will cycle through the rural area of Overijssel, between farmlands and nature parks, to various villages and towns. Almelo is one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands. The city has many parks and green areas, including the beautiful Schelfhorstpark, known for its lush gardens and beautiful ponds. Did you know that Almelo has its own city crier? This colourful figure announces important events and festivities by walking through the city streets and loudly proclaiming his message. If you are lucky, you may come across him during your cycle route through the city.
At the harbour of the Pelmolen in Rijssen, you can take a boat trip on De Regge with the Enterse Zomp. The skipper will then tell you about the flora and fauna you will encounter. If you are interested in the history of jute-industrial town Rijssen, a visit to the Rijssens Museum is definitely worthwhile.
Wierden has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times. For instance, traces of Iron Age farms and Roman settlements have been found. In the Middle Ages, a settlement arose around a church built in the 12th century.
Besides the towns and villages, the natural areas on this route are also a delight to cycle through and along. The young forest with the largest juniper thicket in the Netherlands in De Borkeld, for example. This forest and heathland landscape, grazed by sheep, is protected because the number of juniper trees in the Netherlands has declined sharply. Or the Reggedal, part of the Sallandse Heuvelrug, where meadow birds are given space and biodiversity is paramount. Here meanders rain river De Regge, where wooden shoe makers once transported their products on flat-bottomed barges called zompen.
You won't have enough eyes on this versatile route through the Twente countryside!
