Cycle Route of the Historic Villages of Brabant
Gorinchem, Woudrichem, Sleeuwijk
At Riveer they can tell you exactly if the ferries sail. When that is the case, you can enjoy cycling and sailing here. You ride along and through fortified towns, you can visit Slot Loevestein, where there is plenty to do for young and old. Discover the story of Hugo de Groot who managed to escape from this castle in a book chest.
Enjoy the Dutch landscape where the rivers are never far away. Between Sleeuwijk and the river is Groesplaat nature reserve. From the bird-watching hut here you can enjoy cormorants, black-tailed godwits and redshanks eagerly using the Oudendijkse Geul. When it is high tide, the Merwede can discharge excess water here and thus serves as protection against flooding. The Merwede is no less than 123 km long and is a food source for flora and fauna.
You also cycle through Gorinchem, a beautiful fortified town along the river Linge. The fortress walls surround the old town and offer picturesque views. The old town center is filled with attractive buildings, including the old town hall and an old church. In addition, you will pass the small fortress of Woudrichem or, as people from the region say, Woerekum. Surrounded by water, this was for a long time a very important fortress due to its strategic location.
Be informed about the fishing history and the rich military past in Woudrichem and visit the Nato bridge pillars that have been there since the Cold War. There is much more beauty to see along the way. The scenery alone is beautiful!
