Cycle route Nieuwkoopse Plassen
Nieuwkoop
The Nieuwkoopse Plassen: a beautiful 1,400-hectare nature reserve . At first sight an ordinary Dutch landscape, but for true nature lovers there is a lot to discover. Especially in terms of birds and animals. The vast low moorland is home to the purple heron, spoonbill, root vole, marten and the green-naped orchid, among others. You also pass the town of Nieuwkoop, many of whose houses are surrounded by water.
On the provincial border between Utrecht and South Holland flows the Oude Meije. This cycle route takes you from the beginning to the end of the 3.5-kilometre-long river. Before the 1312s, the river still flowed out at the village of 'Mi'. For a long time, it was a mystery how the village in Woerden disappeared at that time. After many speculations, the mystery was recently solved: a new church was built in the neighbouring village of Zegveld. A reason for Mi residents to move.
