Kamperland, Colijnsplaat, Wissenkerke

Noord-Beveland is the smallest municipality in Zeeland in terms of inhabitants, but it has an awful lot of monuments. These include the many windmills. Cycling around the peninsula and a bit of Zuid-Beveland will introduce you to these special monuments!

The oldest is the mill aptly named De Oude Molen (The Old Mill), built in 1727. You'll find it in Colijnsplaat. Besides being the oldest on this route, it is also perhaps one of the most striking because of its colours. One half of the hull consists of brown bricks, while the other half is plastered all white. There is another mill in Colijnsplaat: mill Nooit Gedacht, also called De Nieuwe Molen. That explains why De Oude Molen bears this name.

Through polder landscapes with small Zeeland farms and along the dyke, you arrive in Kortgene, where mill De Korenbloem can be visited. Browse around the mill shop for traditional flour products!

By bicycle ferry (note, runs only in July and August on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays!*) you cross the Veerse Meer from Kortgene to Wolphaartsdijk. There, from the distance, you can already see the next striking windmill approaching. It is Molen De Hoop, built on the outskirts of the village of Wolphaartsdijk. The unique thing about this mill is its height, although it has not always been that high. No less than twice in its history, the hull has been raised. The different layers are still visible.

Wissenkerke used to have a mill and its own harbour. Yet it was difficult for the Wissenkerkers to maintain the harbour, as the creek silted up time and again. When the adjacent Thoornpolder was reclaimed, the harbour disappeared from the village altogether. This hampered Wissenkerke's development. The harbour of neighbouring village Geersdijk was the nearest harbour at that time, and the Geersdijkers did not have a mill. The two villages began a collaboration, as a result of which no fewer than three mills were built in and around Wissenkerke over time. De Onderneming and Landzigt windmills can still be admired.

With this route, take a journey through the history of Noord-Beveland while cycling and enjoy the cosy villages, wide views and, of course, the mills, each with their own story!

* Note! During the route, you will come across a cycle ferry (between nodes 24 and 25) to travel from North to South Beveland. This ferry sails only in July and August on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (2024). Check the ferry service's website to see if the ferry sails.

* If the ferry does not sail, you can:
- From node 24 continue cycling to 34 (or vice versa from the other direction).
- Do you still want to cycle the full route? Then cycle at node 34 via the bridge to Zuid-Beveland and complete the round via nodes: 35-60-58-51-50-25-35-34 and continue the route via 24 or 33.
