Cycle route Gelderland's surprises
Doesburg, Didam, Rheden
You can start this varied cycle route in Doesburg. Parking place De Bleek, at the Koepoortwal, is close to the junction to starting point 36. In the centre of this cosy town, we immediately selected some interesting museums to visit during this tour. How about the Doesburgsche Mosterdfabriek, Het Openbaarvervoer & Speelgoed Museum, De Schelp van Doesburg or the Lalique Museum, unique for the Netherlands? When you have seen enough of the lively centre of Doesburg, with its well-preserved historical buildings and wide variety of museums, continue cycling across the drawbridge over the Oude IJssel, towards Landgoed Bingerden. Along the floodplains of the IJssel, you will see some impressive monumental trees, Canada poplars, belonging to the Bingerden Estate, which unfortunately is no longer open to the public.
Through the beautiful and vast agricultural landscape, you cycle on to cosy Didam. Here you will visit the mill, named after Saint Maarten. This old mill, like most Dutch mills, has an eventful history. The Dominee Stork Park, in honour of the former pastor of this small town in Gelderland, is also a nice place to stop for a while and perhaps you will stop at one of the cosy terraces in Didam.
You leave Didam and cycle through the outskirts of Zevenaar, past De Fruitkraam and the Waterbuffalo Farm to Giesbeek. Giesbeek also has an old mill, with a mill shop, which is open on Saturday mornings. From Giesbeek, in season, you can take a ferry, right through the recreational lakes and across the IJssel to Rheden. This recreational area Rhederlaag, which consists of the Lathumse Plas, the Giesplas, the Westerplas and the Valeplas, is bustling. Here you can enjoy life on and near the water. You will find campsites, recreational parks, marinas and beaches.
Via Rheden, the village across the IJssel, on the edge of De Veluwezoom, and Landgoed Middachten, you cycle back to Doesburg. Upon arrival in Doesburg, you will conclude a varied day and have got to know the vast area between Doesburg and Didam better.
Note!
Along the way, you will encounter two bicycle ferries. These sail from 1 April to 1 October. Check the Pit stop and the website for more information on the sailing schedule.
Do you cycle the route when the ferry does not sail? Then cycle round via junctions 24-96-97-98-90-88-78-80 (or vice versa from the other direction). You will then cycle about 8 kilometres extra.
