Cycle route from Meppel to the Holtingerveld

Meppel, Havelte, Ruinerwold
Get on your bike for a beautiful route from Meppel to the impressive Holtingerveld. This nature reserve northeast of Havelte is full of vast heathlands, old shifting sands and rugged oak forests. The landscape was formed during the last Ice Age, when enormous glaciers pushed boulders and masses of sand in front of them, leaving behind this rolling terrain. In the middle of this ancient nature, a flock of sheep graze peacefully among the purple heather and sand drifts – a beautiful sight.
The famous dolmens of Havelte are also located near the Holtingerveld. These silent giants have withstood the test of time for thousands of years. These impressive stone tombs from the Funnel Beaker culture are a tangible reminder of the first inhabitants of Drenthe.
As you continue cycling, you dive deeper and deeper into nature. The route takes you along idyllic sandy paths and winding cycle paths where, on a beautiful day, you might just spot a deer or a bird of prey. Holtingerveld is not only a beautiful nature reserve, but also a place full of stories – from prehistoric graves to a hiding place for aeroplanes during the Second World War.
On the way back to Meppel you will pass through Ruinerwold. Here you can get a taste of real rural Drenthe life thanks to the historic farms and vast stretches of farmland. A visit to the Karstenhoeve farm museum is definitely worthwhile; you will get a glimpse into how farmers lived and worked here for centuries. Woldzuivel's farmyard offers a glimpse into a modern, organic farm. In the farm shop you can taste the most delicious homemade dairy products and take some home with you!
