Cycle route for the natural tourist
Balkbrug, Dedemsvaart, Nieuwleusen
Start your cycle route from the village also known in Low Saxon as 'De Balk': Balkbrug. The village owes its name to a 'beam' under the 'bridge' lying across the canal the Dedemsvaart. This beam prevented ships with too big a draught from passing under the bridge. The village is surrounded by beautiful nature that we don't want to deprive you of. Between the natural wooded surroundings, you also come across great landscaped gardens, such as the gardens of Mien Ruys in Dedemsvaart.
Mien was one of the most important garden architects of the 20th century. Be inspired and admire the thirty gardens from Mien Ruys' life's work. Tip: you can also sign up for various workshops and packages. Booking in advance is often necessary.
Get back on your bike to continue on the road to Witharen. There you will find the famous sculpture garden of over 15,000 m2, with a different exhibition every season. Check the website to see which exhibition is currently on display.
Continue the cycle route along rural roads and check out the old-fashioned farms. Towards the end of the route, you pass play pond the Black Pines. In summer, you can swim or have a picnic in this natural environment.
Start and finish your route at Camping Si-Es-An. You can easily park your car here and charge your electric bike if needed.
