Cycle route Farm life in the Gelderse Valley
Leusden, Woudenberg, Scherpenzeel
Between the Veluwe and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug lies a strip of equally beautiful countryside: Gelderse Vallei. Did you know that, before Gelderse Vallei was formed, the valley of the Meuse ran here? The Saalien Ice Age changed this as a large amount of ice remained in this valley. As a result, the Meuse had to adjust its course. In later times, many peat landscapes could be found here. Now you will find an alternation of grassland, woodland and heathland, but large parts still have wet soil. It is also a region where many farms are located. Having your feet in the clay at the farmer's takes on extra meaning here
Discover what life was like here at the beginning of the 20th century at Museumboerderij De Weistaar and the monumental Hoeve Groot Zandbrink. At the latter, you cycle through the beautiful Estate De Boom, where you will encounter special plant and animal species. But you will also get to know modern organic farms, where you are welcome to take a look. Some of these farms offer their own products in their farm shop or vending machine. Daily fresh and so, with no fuss, straight from the farmer to take home with you. Delicious!
