Cycle route enjoying Limburg nature
Schinveld, Heerlen, Brunssum
This cycle route takes you past several nature reserves and castles. Thus, the bicycle route passes nature reserve Strijthagerbeekdal, - Imstenraderbos, - Terworm and along the Brunssummerheide.
The nature reserve Strijthagerbeekdal is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is located in the Strijthagerbeek valley of the same name. In the Strijthagerbeekdal many plants and animals characteristic of the South Limburg stream valley landscape are found, such as purplebell, bitter cress, kingfisher and many butterflies. The steep slopes of the stream valley are forested, the less steep slopes are mainly used as grassland and arable land. In short, a nature reserve where there is plenty to see.
You continue your route towards lookout Beukenberg. A hill with a height of 115 meters above NAP (Normal Amsterdam Level). Did you know that the hill was previously excavated to extract sand and gravel? This created quarries and waste was dumped in them. Of course that doesn't sound very attractive to visit, but between 2000 and 2001 the entire area was taken under others and a clean layer of soil was created and planted. As a result, it is now a beautiful walking area. At the top you will find the viewpoint with a magnificent panorama.
Ride this cycle route and admire the beautiful nature of South Limburg.
