Cycle route Dunes in Holland
Noordwijk, Katwijk, Voorhout
This route takes you through national park the Hollandse Duinen with its dune and embankment landscape. Along the beach are the young dunes which, under the influence of the wind. continue to develop and can grow high. Further inland you find the old dunes, which thousands of years ago were young dunes, but due to the high coastal water level in the wet coastal area, sand barriers and marshes arose where peat could accumulate. But also grey dunes with great biodiversity where you find sea buckthorns, lichens, grasses and herbs.
It is truly a delight to cycle through the rolling dune landscape with an almost continuously magnificent view of the North Sea. But this route offers more beauty, besides dunes, beach and sea, you cycle for instance past kilometres of bulb fields, which guarantee a crazy explosion of colours in spring, or the cosy seaside resorts Noordwijk and Katwijk. Stop off at a picking garden to take some of those beautiful things home with you, or at one of Zuid-Holland's beautiful country estates.
If you want to learn more about the history of this area, the Atlantic Wall Museum, in Noordwijk, is a recommendation. You will already know all about the area's wartime past before you cycle past the trenches and bunkers at Landgoed Nieuw Leeuwenhorst.
