Cycle route Discover typical North Holland villages
Scharwoude, Volendam, Edam
Get on your bike for a lovely cycle route along beautiful authentic North Holland villages.
At the Markermeer lies the charming Edam. Here, you will find historic houses and, in the summer, a cheese market where, of course, you can taste real Edam cheese. When you cycle out of Edam, you immediately reach Volendam. In this village, the inhabitants distinguish themselves from the rest of the Netherlands in terms of their customs and have therefore put Volendam on the tourist map. Get off your bike and stroll around the harbour and the cute little streets. Literally put yourself in the shoes of a Volendammer and have your picture taken in typical costume or hop on a boat for a trip to Marken.
Via Monnickendam, you will cycle through the Purmer forest to Axwijk, a small hamlet. In the past, you paid a toll to the inhabitants here; now you pass it before you know it.
On the way, you can still catch a glimpse of the Beemster - the area, not the cheese! And via the Beemster, you arrive in the West Frisian village of Scharwoude. This village used to be situated on the Zuiderzee and experienced uncertain times with floods. Nowadays, the village mainly benefits from the water and delivers beautiful pictures.
The best place to relax after this Dutch voyage of discovery is at one of the disembarkation points along the way. Enjoy this cycle route and have a nice meal!
