Cycle route Crafts around Apeldoorn
Apeldoorn, Beekbergen, Loenen
On this tour, discover not only the highlights around Apeldoorn, such as the Royal House and the Veluwe, but also history through Apeldoorn's crafts. Take for instance the innovative bicycle brand Sparta, which saw the light of day in 1917 when three men on the Hoofdstraat in Apeldoorn started a wholesale business in bicycles and bicycle parts. In their history of over 100 years now, Sparta became the inventor of the bicycle with auxiliary motor and the first electric bicycle in the Netherlands. In 2017, Sparta celebrated their 100th anniversary with the launch of this beautiful cycle route.
This cycle route takes you even further back in history. In the 16th century, the Veluwe played a major role in the paper industry. At that time, there were no less than 168 paper mills around streams, lakes and small rivers whose water was used to make paper pulp. Take a look at Paper Mill De Middelste Molen in Loenen, where paper is still made in the traditional way today. The CODA Museum in Apeldoorn also reflects on the rich paper industry of the past. The museum has an impressive collection of paper art, jewellery and books, and also offers a glimpse into the artisanal process of making paper.
A visit to the Veluwse Stoomtrein Maatschappij in Beekbergen is a nostalgic experience, as is the Ford Museum in Beekbergen, where you can admire a collection of vintage Ford old-timers. The Ford Museum also brings back the paper industry: it is located in the Tullekensmolen, a beautiful water mill that served as a paper mill in the early 17th century.
In Apeldoorn, don't forget to visit Beer Brewery De Vlijt. Although the brewery has only existed relatively recently, the Veluwse Schavuyt special beer is brewed here according to a traditional recipe. On weekends, you can visit here for a tour or tasting in the Tasting Room.
In short, this tour offers a unique mix of history, culture and relaxation for an unforgettable day.
