Cycle route Colourful eye-catchers
Gasselte, Drouwen, Borger
The surroundings of Borger have a lot of woods, but if you think you will only find greenery, you are wrong! You will see pearly white beaches with azure water and in late summer, the heather turns a beautiful purple. The shifting sands fill up with almond-coloured sand and the slate-grey boulders of the dolmens stand out beautifully against the blue sky. If that is not an encouragement to come here... If you come by car, you can park near cycle junction 61.
In Gasselte, you will be surprised by the tropical appearance of the two lakes that are hidden there. A short walk to the viewpoint 't Nije Hemelriek is worthwhile! Then you can smell the heather in the Drouwenerzand. Feast your eyes on all the colourful natural stones and minerals at the exposition farm in Drouwen. Want to see more stone? In the traditional village of Borger, you pass the Hunebedcentrum, with the largest hunebed in the Netherlands nearby.
Those who would like to see the other side of trees are invited to Buitencentrum Boomkroonpad. Take an exciting walk through the root tunnel and enjoy the views from the tops of trees. As the centre is also the starting point for the Gieten-Borger forestry service, it is also a great starting point for a treasure hunt through the forest or a ride on the Bospaardentram (horse tram through the forest).
