Cycle route Balancing on the German border
Eibergen, Neede, Groenlo
Eibergen is situated on the beautiful Berkel river. From your bicycle, you can enjoy the view of the water. With a boat trip on the 'Berkelzomp', for example, you can experience Eibergen from the perspective of the water. But at the Mallumse Molen, a historic water mill dating from 1748, you also have a beautiful view of the water. On Saturdays, you can also view the mill from the inside.
When you cross the German border, you come across the Zwillbrocker Venn, a large fen that came into being after peat was cut here. The lush nature full of wild herbs and plants is home to more than 100 bird species that breed here. You are bound to come across Black-headed Gulls, as 16,000 live in this nature reserve. But with a bit of luck, you may also spot flamingos, which can be found here from spring to autumn.
Also stop by the historic fortified town of Groenlo. The town used to be called Grolle. In the Eighty Years' War, Grolle was liberated from the Spaniards by Frederik Hendrik. On the Mussenbergbolwerk, also called the Kanonswal, are cannons, including the cannon that Frederik Hendrik donated in 1627 after his victory. Since then, it has been a city of Burgundian hospitality. It is therefore no wonder that Grolsch, the beer of Grolle, saw the light of day here. The Grolsch brewery has now moved, but you can still find a quirky brewery in Groenlo where you can taste the specialities.
After this cycling tour, you will have explored all the beautiful spots of this part of the Achterhoek, balancing on the German border!
