Zwolle, Wijhe, Windesheim

The village of Windesheim has an interesting story to tell. Excavations show that this place was already inhabited during the Early Stone Age, some 11,000 years before our era.

Until the 16th century, Windesheim was also the site of the mother monastery of the Congregation of Windesheim. This group built monasteries throughout north-western Europe. Not much remains of the original monastery, but the old brewery has been given a second life as the local Protestant church.

House Windesheim, which used to stand there, is sadly no longer there. It was hit by an allied bomber in World War II, and now only some outbuildings remain. The area around Windesheim still has a lot of beauty to offer. A cycle route that runs largely along the river IJssel offers beautiful views.
