To protect the city of Utrecht, forts were built in the 19th century. You will come across a number of these forts along the way. The Romans were also very active in this area. The rich history and archaeological finds from that time can be discovered along the way at Castellum Hoge Woerd.
Of course, they had already realised that this is a beautiful area. The area was therefore a favourite spot for the rich. So don't be surprised if you come across imposing castles, country houses and country estates along the way.
