Cycle route around the Zuidlaardermeer
Zuidlaren, Kropswolde, Appelbergen
This route leads you along the beautiful Zuidlaardermeer. According to the old children's song, Berend Botje once set off from these shores on an adventure, perhaps across this very water. The lake lies peacefully between Drenthe and Groningen and offers a varied landscape of wide views over the water and green polders.
On the way, make a stop at watchtower Leinewijk, a great place to view the area from above. From here you have a panoramic view over the lake and the vast reed beds. It is an ideal place to stop and observe the many birds living in this area. A little further on, the route takes you through nature reserve Appelbergen, a quiet forest area with winding paths that lead you past small fens and heathlands. This former military site is now a beautiful place, where nature has prevailed and you can enjoy it.
The beautiful nature, rich history, and quiet spots along the way make it an ideal tour for those who like variety. There is something to discover everywhere: beautiful nature reserves, ancient dolmens, bird-rich wetlands and historic mills.
