Cycle route around Hoogeveen
Hoogeveen
Hoogeveen was once destined to grow into a place for 100,000 inhabitants. It never came to that, but its ambitious plans have made Hoogeveen a town with many amenities. In the centre you will find old houses with beautiful facades, such as the House with the Pigeonholes and a former drugstore with a gable stone dating back to 1703. In the gable, probably the oldest in Hoogeveen, you can read the text ‘So Godt voor ons is Wie sal tegen ons syn’.
A mill has stood on the site of Korenmolen De Zwaluw since the 17th century. The current mill was built in 1834. Cycle past, get off, hear the gears creak and smell the freshly ground flour. Through the centre runs De Cascade: now a work of art, formerly a canal where goods were transported.
En route, you pass nature reserves such as De Olde Kene and De Koeweide, where you can enjoy lush nature, ponds and a rich bird population. Near Sod hut Nieuw Balinge is an authentic sod hut, a special reminder of the Drenthe peat workers' past. Further on in Hoogeveen you will find Zuiderpark, a green oasis where you can relax by ponds and walking paths, surrounded by urban nature. Perfect for taking a break and enjoying the scenery!
