Winschoten, Blauwestad, Midwolda

Winschoten is famous for the Adrillenmarkt, a fun annual fair held on the first and second Monday of November. It is a huge spectacle that draws some eighty to a hundred thousand visitors every year. From stalls full of treats and trinkets to fairground rides and live music—there is something for everyone. The market has a unique atmosphere and is the place to meet people, stroll around and simply enjoy the hustle and bustle and conviviality. Just outside the city lies Blauwestad, an area with lots of water and nature, ideal for living, recreation and relaxation. The plan was once that Blauwestad would become a popular residential area, but the sale of houses is not yet going as hoped. That does not alter the fact that it is a beautiful place where you can enjoy boating, cycling and the peace and quiet.

A little further on lies Midwolda, a village with a special piece of nature: the only primeval forest in Groningen at the Ennemaborg country estate. Here you can enjoy a lovely walk among the old trees and, with a little luck, even spot wild Konik horses. And when it gets really cold in winter, the village turns into a paradise for skating enthusiasts. Exciting marathons are held on the natural ice rink, and who knows, maybe you can take to the ice yourself!
