Cycle route along West Brabant waterways

Zevenbergen, Willemstad, Klundert
Today, set off along the waterways of West Brabant and discover the Hollandsch Diep, the Volkerak and the river Dintel. Did you know that the Hollandsch Diep was originally created after the Sint-Elisabethflood of 1421, forming a large inland lake? This route takes you past historic fortified towns such as Willemstad, famous for its star-shaped fortifications. Klundert is another typical fortified town, where you can visit the National Flax and Sugar Museum to learn more about the regional history of flax and sugar production.
Along the way, you will pass impressive forts that were part of the Stelling van het Hollandsch Diep and the Volkerak. Fort Sabina, with its imposing Napoleonic tower from 1811, is the largest and definitely worth a visit. From the watchtower at the Volkerak locks, you have a great view over the water and can see Fort Prins Frederik on the other side of the Volkerak. The Volkerak and connecting polder meadows are important habitats for various bird species. An example are the Sint Anthoniegorzen.
The route partly follows the winding banks of the river Dintel, which meanders through the picturesque Brabant landscape. Along the Dintel you will find rustic villages and historical sights, such as the Keenesluis, a 248-year-old floodgate that was later converted into a scoop wheel steam pumping station. This cycle route offers a perfect mix of nature, culture and history, and introduces you to the watery beauty of West Brabant.
