Cycle route along water and blossom
Ruinerwold, Koekange, Ruinen
Drenthe may be mostly known for its beautiful nature and dolmens, the province also has some surprising waterways that you might not immediately associate with this region. While exploring the province by bike, you will be treated to beautiful crossings over the river Wold Aa and the Koekanger Aa. You will also leave behind the Hoogeveense Vaart canal, a waterway that bears witness to Drenthe's rich history in shipping and trade.
Before you immerse yourself in the floral splendour of this cycle route, you will pass through the Gijsselterkoelen nature reserve. This wet heathland area full of woods and fens shows you Drenthe's original landscape. Between the Gijsselterkoelen and the Dwingelderveld you will find the gardens of the Lazy Gardener. Although you won't say he was lazy while visiting these beautiful gardens.... You'll feast your eyes!
Along the route you will pass beautiful old farms with thatched roofs and you can delve into the rural history of the region. Go back in time at the little shop Opoe's Erfenis, or experience farm life of yesteryear at Museum Farm De Karstenhoeve. Here, the history of the region is brought to life in a fascinating way.
On the road to Ruinerwold, you cycle several kilometres along the Dokter Larijweg. This road is adorned on both sides by some 1,100 pear trees. In April, when the trees are in full bloom, this part of the route is spectacular!
