Cycle route along the Rhine and across the border
Millingen aan de Rijn, Tolkamer, Emmerik
If you are close to Germany, why not cycle a bit in that direction? During this route, you will pass beautiful nature along the Rhine and interesting historical Pit stops.
You do both the Millingerwaard in the Netherlands and the Emmericher Ward in Germany. These floodplains protect the inland from high water from the Rhine, but are often dry and then provide a habitat for various animals and plants. At a branch of the Rhine, you pass the old Griethausener Eisenbahnbrücke. This historic railway bridge used to be used for freight and passenger transport. Today, the bridge is no longer in use, but it is a nice place to stop and read the information boards.
Not far from there, you cycle past the Johanna Sebus Denkmal. This monument commemorates Johanna Sebus, who saved her mother during a dyke breach in 1809, but was herself killed while trying to save another woman and her daughter. The monument symbolises her selflessness and courageous action.
Through the green landscape, you slowly cycle back to the Netherlands. Past Molen de Duffelt, you cycle through Millingerwaard to Millingen aan de Rijn. Here you take a ferry. It is wise to check the sailing times before you jump on your bike to avoid any surprises.
In Tolkamer, you can easily park at the following address: Europakade 76, 6916 BG Tolkamer.
