Cycle route along (the) Leidsche Rijn
Vleuten, Harmelen, Kockengen
This cycle route runs through the area around Harmelen, which was voted the nicest village in Utrecht a few years ago. You will cycle past beautiful spots, through green polders and along rivers such as the Oude Rijn (Old Rhine), a remnant of the former Rhine. On the way, you will also pass castle De Haar. The castle looks medieval, but is equipped with every luxury. Architect Pierre Cuypers, together with his son Joseph, rebuilt the ruins into this beautiful castle between 1892 and 1912.
In the area between Vleuten and De Meern, you will find the Leidsche Rhine canal and the residential district of the same name. In Roman times, this area was the border of the empire. Various archaeological finds from the Roman era were made during the construction of the Leidsche Rijn district. These finds can be seen at Castellum Hoge Woerd.
Discover the area around (the) Leidsche Rijn, enjoy nature and unravel the history of the Roman Empire.
