Cycle route along the black water and the blue hand
Genemuiden, Hasselt, Zwartsluis, Vollenhove
The Zwartewater (black water) is not really black, but that is what this 19-kilometer-long river is called. This river flows into the Zwarte Meer (black lake), which you can also see by bike. Bird Island (Vogeleiland) is also located in this Zwartemeer. Unfortunately, you cannot cycle there, but it is possible to book an excursion with a forest ranger. This does not happen often to preserve the peace of the birds. Furthermore, you cycle this route over the Weerribben-Wieden, which with 10.000 hectares is the largest contiguous low peat bog area in North-West Europe. It is a beautiful sight among the swamp forests, lakes, ditches, reed plots and flowery meadows. This is also an area full of special animals and plants that can only survive in these areas. In this nature reserve lies the hamlet of Blauwe Hand, which is located in the head of Overijssel.
